Since February 2006, St Michael’s has had a link with the diocese of Kondoa in Central Tanzania, following a visit from Bishop Yohana Mkavu to our church. We had already agreed to support a village church in the diocese and Bishop Yohana showed us some photos of Chemba, a village about an hours drive from Kondoa. The church building there was small and crumbling so we promised to provide funds to build a new one.

In the summer of 2007 Bishop Yohana sent an invitation for representatives of St Michael’s to attend the consecration of the new church by Archbishop Donald Mtemela and two of our members, Chris and Eric Hookins were overwhelmed by the generosity of the welcome from the bishop and all the people when they were able to go to Tanzania for this occasion in July 2007. At St Michael’s suggestion the new church was called St James, Chemba.
.
It was a very noisy and joyful celebration.

The church of St James was not finished when we visited but work progresses and St. Michael’s is committed to ongoing support for this work and other projects in Chemba, including the possibility of providing a permanent water supply.

Whilst in Kondoa, Eric and Chris also attended the dedication of another church at Mwakisabe.

Oakfield Primary School in Wilmington also has a link with the state school of Ubembeni in Kondoa and Chris and Eric received a tremendous welcome from them when we visited the school with news and greetings from Oakfield school.
Another visit is being considered for 2009.
Chris is a Pastoral Assistant and Eric is a Lay Reader at St Michael’s and are St Michael’s link with Chemba and Kondoa.
