Gravestones and Memorials
Many ask us what is permitted for gravestones and memorials.
The Church of England regulations are here You will need to fill out the form "CR1" for any gravestone, memorial or addition to either.
These are the guidelines that should be followed and are set by Church of England law.
Sometimes families ask for something which is a slight variation on these regulations.
We have agreed as a church that if there is already a precedent for such a variation in the graveyard, then it is reasonable for us to make an exception in those special circumstances.
There are three exceptions to this:
(1) Gravestones must be no larger than the 'normal' size (though they may be smaller).
(2) Any gravestone proposal that has a photo on it will not be approved. You may, of course, follow the normal procedure of appeal to the diocese, which we will respect.
(3) Any vase in the Garden of Remembrance must not exceed 305mmx203mmx203mm (12"x8"x8")
*‘Monument’ includes headstone, cross, kerb, border, vase, chain, railing, tablet, plaque, marker, flatstone, tombstone or monument or tomb of any other kind.
